Pope stresses need for sacramental confession
Vatican, Mar. 14 (CWNews.com) - True conversion of heart entails confession of one's sins, Pope John Paul II (bio - news) state in a
message released March 14.
In his message to the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, Cardinal James Francis Stafford, the Holy Father
underlined the need for the faithful to confess their sins before approaching the Eucharist. The two
sacraments are closely related, he said, encouraging priests to "preach the true doctine about the necessity
of the sacrament of reconciliation for approaching Communion." The Pope lamented the fact that in many
Catholic communities, the faithful have lost their appreciation of the need for regular Confession. Citing in
particular the Council of Trent, he said that "in the Church's tradition, sacramental reconciliation has always
been seen as closely connected with the sacrificial banquet of the Eucharist." He pointed to the penitential
rite in the Mass as further illustration of that link.
"Only those who have a sincere desire to avoid mortal sin can receive the Body of Christ," the Pope said.
He added that priests should encourage the faithful to be purified of venial sins, as well, before receiving
Communion.
"We live in a society that seems to have lost the sense of God and of sin," the Pontiff said. For that reason,
he observed, "Christ's invitation to conversion is all the more urgent."
The Code of Canon Law requires Catholics to confess their sins at least once a year, and to confess any
grave sin before receiving the Eucharist. However, the faithful are strongly encouraged to make more
frequent use of the sacrament, and to confession minor faults in order to strengthen their spiritual lives.
Father Gianfranco Girotti, an official at the Apostolic Penitentiary, remarked in a March 11 Vatican Radio
interview that since the Second Vatican Council there has been a marked increase in the number of
Catholics receiving Communion regularly, but a sharp simultaneous decrease in the number of confessions.
He said that the "crisis of Confession" in the Western world is caused "mainly by a loss of the sense of sin,"
tied in turn to "an ethical system that relativizes moral norms." The Apostolic Penitentiary is the top Church
tribunal handling issues of conscience and the "internal forum"-- ordinarily, matters pertaining to Confession.
The Apostolic Penitentiary also oversees questions about indulgences. Each year, the office organizes
several days of reflection on moral and dogmatic issues. The Pope's message was sent for one such
meeting.

CITÉ DU VATICAN, dimanche 13 mars 2005 (ZENIT.org) – Le pape Jean-Paul II a rappelé ce samedi que,
selon la doctrine de l’Eglise, aucune personne consciente d’être en état de péché mortel, ne peut communier.
Le Saint-Père a rappelé l’importance du sacrement de la réconciliation.  Le pape rappelle tout d’abord que
les passages de l’Evangile proposés par la liturgie du carême montrent Jésus qui convertit la Samaritaine,
qui guérit l’aveugle-né, qui ressuscite Lazare. « Son regard pénétrant, sa parole et son jugement d’amour
éclairent la conscience de ceux qu’ils rencontrent, provoquant en eux la conversion et un profond
renouvellement », écrit-il.  « Nous vivons dans une société qui semble souvent avoir perdu le sens de Dieu
et du péché. L’invitation du Christ à la conversion, qui suppose la confession consciente de ses péchés et
la demande de pardon et de salut, devient donc plus urgente, dans ce contexte », explique le Saint-Père.
« Le prêtre, dans l’exercice de son ministère est conscient d’agir «en la personne du Christ et sous l’action
de l’Esprit Saint».  Le pape rappelle que dans la «tradition de l’Eglise» le sacrement de la réconciliation a
toujours été étroitement associé à l’Eucharistie. «Dans le rite de la Sainte Messe de nombreux éléments soulignent cette exigence
de purification et de conversion». «Seul celui qui a la conscience sincère de ne pas avoir commis un péché mortel peut recevoir le
corps du Christ», déclare le pape, en rappelant que ceci était l’enseignement du Concile du Trente et continue d’être «l’enseignement
de l’Eglise aujourd’hui encore». Le pape cite le Catéchisme de l’Eglise Catholique, n. 1385, ainsi que l’enclyclique Ecclesia de
Eucharistia, n. 36-37. Le Catéchisme précise la différence entre «péché véniel» et «péché mortel» (cf. CEC, 1854-1864).  Jean-Paul
II rappella «la nécessité du sacrement de la Réconciliation pour pouvoir communier, lorsque l’on est conscient de ne pas être dans
la grâce de Dieu». Le pape encourage les fidèles «à recevoir le corps et le sang du Christ pour être purifiés des péchés véniels et
des imperfections».  Il conclut son message en demandant à Marie d’aider les prêtres à être des «instruments» « dociles de la
miséricorde et de la sainteté de Dieu ». « Qu’elle rende chaque prêtre conscient de la haute mission qu’il est appelé à accomplir avec
pureté de cœur et docilité à l’action de l’Esprit Saint, pour reverser sur le monde, avec l’imagination et l’ardeur de la charité, le don
qu’il reçoit lui-même sur l’autel », conclut Jean-Paul II.

                                          Chastity and Faithfulness: Sure Ways to Avoid AIDS
                                          Bishop Sgreccia Says Condoms Don't Ensure Immunity

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 17, 2005 (Zenit.org).- The sure strategy to prevent the spread of AIDS is based on
chastity and faithfulness, which Catholics live within marriage, says the president of the Pontifical Academy
for Life.

Bishop Elio Sgreccia disagreed with the idea of using condoms as a means of prevention since, among other
things, they do not guarantee immunity from infection.

The prelate addressed the argument today at a press conference on the academy's Feb. 21-23 assembly.

Bishop Sgreccia explained that to guide the conscience of the faithful on this matter, the Church reminds
them of two precepts: "conjugal love, namely, sexuality oriented to marriage, which implies that all acts that
take place outside the sacramental context cannot be worthy; and the protection of life."

"In a word, one must take into account both the Sixth as well as the Fifth Commandments," he stressed.

"The natural view of the use of sexuality within marriage, which implies respect for the principles of chastity
and fidelity is, in the opinion of all, the way to prevent the spread of AIDS and, as such, should be stimulated,
approved and encouraged," he added.
In regard to the condom, Bishop Sgreccia asked journalists: "But, are we really sure that it immunizes against
infection?"

"Research carried out says no," he said. "Therefore, in the face of the risk of infecting a person, even if using
a technical element that might turn out to be insufficient, the morality of the Church continues to prefer
chastity and faithfulness."
As a confirmation of the Church's proposal, Bishop Sgreccia mentioned an article published in the journal
Science on Uganda's experience.

"That country has opted for the strategy of education and behavior based on conjugal chastity and
faithfulness," he noted. "This has resulted in a decrease in the rate of infections."
